It's one of the most common conversations we have at Bison Machinery, whether a customer is standing in our Jamestown showroom or calling our Casselton location. Someone needs a skid steer, an excavator, or another piece of construction equipment for an upcoming project, and the first question is almost always the same: should I buy new, or is a used machine the smarter move?
There's no single right answer. The correct choice depends on how the machine will be used, how many hours it will log each year, what your budget and financing situation look like, and how much risk you're willing to carry if something breaks down mid-project. Below, we're walking through the real factors North Dakota contractors, farmers, and property owners should weigh before making that call.
Start With How the Machine Will Actually Be Used
Before you even look at price tags, think honestly about utilization. If a piece of equipment is going to run daily, all season, on tight deadlines, downtime becomes expensive fast. A crew standing around waiting on a breakdown costs more in lost labor and missed schedules than the difference between a new and used machine ever will. In that scenario, a new machine's reliability and warranty coverage often pay for themselves.
On the other hand, if you need a machine for occasional projects, seasonal work, or as a backup to your primary fleet, a well-maintained used unit can deliver the same capability at a meaningfully lower upfront cost. Matching the machine to actual workload, rather than buying based on budget alone or prestige alone, is the single biggest factor in whether a purchase turns out to be a smart one.
The Case for Buying New
New equipment arrives with zero hours on the clock, the latest engine and emissions technology, and a full manufacturer warranty that protects you against the kind of major failures that can sideline a job site for weeks. For North Dakota contractors working through unpredictable weather windows, that predictability matters. You're not gambling on hidden wear items, and you're not trying to track down maintenance history from a previous owner.
New machines also tend to bring meaningful upgrades in operator comfort, visibility, and safety systems, which can translate into real productivity gains over a season. Features like improved cab ergonomics, better hydraulics, and updated control layouts reduce operator fatigue, and less fatigue generally means fewer mistakes and more work completed per day. If your equipment gets used daily for specialized, high-demand tasks, or if you're building out a fleet for long-term growth, new equipment is often the stronger long-term investment.
Financing is also frequently more favorable on new equipment. Manufacturers and dealers regularly offer promotional rates, extended terms, or bundled incentives on current-year models that simply aren't available on used inventory. If cash flow is a concern, it's worth asking what promotions are currently running before writing off new equipment as unaffordable.
The Case for Buying Used
Used equipment remains one of the most practical ways to get working capability without the full sticker price of a brand-new machine. A well-maintained used skid steer, loader, or excavator can often be put to work immediately, without the lead times that sometimes come with ordering new equipment during high-demand periods. For a contractor who needs a machine on-site next week, not next quarter, that immediate availability can be the deciding factor.
Used equipment also carries less depreciation risk. A new machine loses a significant chunk of its value the moment it leaves the lot, while a used machine has already absorbed that early depreciation curve. That makes used equipment appealing for contractors who plan to resell or trade in relatively soon, or who simply want to preserve capital for other parts of the business.
The tradeoff, of course, is condition and history. A used machine's value depends entirely on how much reliable work you can get out of it after purchase, which means inspection matters enormously. Hour meters, maintenance records, undercarriage wear, hydraulic performance, and structural condition all need a real look before you sign anything. This is exactly where buying from an established, factory-trained dealer instead of an unknown private seller makes a difference. When you buy used equipment through Bison Machinery, you're getting machines that have gone through our own service department rather than an unverified listing with no service history attached.
Total Cost of Ownership Matters More Than Sticker Price
It's tempting to compare new and used equipment purely on the purchase price, but that's an incomplete picture. Total cost of ownership includes fuel efficiency, expected maintenance and repair costs, insurance, storage, resale value, and downtime risk over the life of the machine. A used machine with a lower purchase price can end up costing more over several years if it requires frequent repairs or burns more fuel than a newer, more efficient model. Conversely, a new machine's higher upfront cost can be offset by lower maintenance costs, stronger fuel efficiency, and better resale value down the road.
Before deciding, it's worth running the numbers on both scenarios over a realistic ownership period, not just the first year. Factor in how many hours you expect to put on the machine annually, what routine service will cost, and what you'd realistically expect to recover if you sold or traded the machine in three to five years.
Regional Realities for North Dakota Buyers
Availability and pricing can vary quite a bit depending on region, and North Dakota has its own set of realities worth knowing. Winter weather windows compress project timelines, which makes uptime and reliability especially valuable for contractors who can't afford unexpected downtime during a short working season. At the same time, agricultural and construction demand across the state keeps both new and used inventory moving, so timing your purchase around your project schedule, rather than waiting for the "perfect" deal, often serves buyers better in the long run.
Local support matters just as much as the machine itself. A dealer with parts on the shelf and technicians who know the equipment can get you back up and running in hours instead of days, which is a real advantage over ordering parts from an out-of-state seller or an online marketplace with no local presence.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Decide
Whether you're leaning new or used, a few honest questions will steer you toward the right choice. How many hours per year will this machine realistically run? Is this equipment critical to daily operations, or is it backup and occasional-use equipment? What financing terms are currently available, and how do they compare between new and used options? What does the warranty or service history actually cover? And finally, who is going to service this machine once it's on your job site, and how quickly can they respond if something goes down mid-project?
Answering these honestly, rather than defaulting to whichever option feels more familiar, is what separates a purchase that pays off from one that becomes a headache.
A Mixed Fleet Strategy Often Wins
Many of the most successful contractors we work with don't treat this as an all-or-nothing decision. They buy new for the machines that run every single day and are central to production, while filling out the rest of their fleet with well-maintained used equipment for support work, backup capacity, or occasional specialty tasks. This kind of mixed strategy balances reliability where it matters most against capital efficiency everywhere else, and it's worth discussing openly with your dealer rather than assuming one approach fits your entire operation.
How Bison Machinery Can Help You Decide
Bison Machinery has been family owned and operated since John Romsdal opened our doors in 1974, and that history means we've walked North Dakota customers through this exact decision for five decades. As an authorized Bobcat and Versatile dealer, with locations in Jamestown and Casselton, we carry both new and thoroughly serviced used construction equipment, backed by a service department staffed with factory-trained technicians and a well-stocked parts inventory.
Rather than pushing you toward whichever machine sits on our lot, our team will walk through your project scope, your budget, and your realistic utilization with you, then help you compare new and used options side by side, including current financing and promotional offers. That kind of honest, informed comparison is how you end up with equipment that actually fits your job site, instead of a purchase you second-guess a year later.
